How to Clean Window Screens Like a Pro

Your window screens can go by a long time without being cleaned. And who wants to look at a dirty, messy window screen?

But besides looking bad, the constant presence of dirt and grime around your home may not be good for your health, especially if you're allergic. Let's read a bit more about window screens, what are they useful for and how you can clean them like a pro.

Why Are Window Screens Important?

A window screen is a mesh that provides protection against dust and dirt. They are also capable of stopping some pests such as bugs, birds and squirrels.

They are able to act as insulators as well, keeping the air cool during the winter and preserving heat during winter. This can come in handy in some areas like Dallas, where temperatures are very high during summer.

Some models also work as air filters, or as UV protection screens.

Regular Cleaning For Window Screens

Vacuuming is one of the most effective cleaning methods. You should use a soft bristle attachment, which are included for most vacuum cleaners nowadays.

To apply this method, just remove your window screens and lay them on a towel on a flat surface. It could be your deck or your garage floor, for example. If you have a lot of windows, you should label each window screen so you'll know where to place them back.

Run your vacuum cleaner both sides and reinstall your window screens, unless you want to perform a deep clean.

Another popular technique involves using a lint roller. They can remove quickly the most common
debris, hair residues, dust, etc. Just roll your lint roller softly against the window screen. Remove it after it gets too worn out.

Deep Clean: Time to Grab a Hose

Depending on how dirty your windows screens get, you should perform a deep clean once in a while, could be around 4 to 6 times a year.

You're going to need:

  • Warm water
  • Neutral dish soap
  • A soft bristle brush
  • A Garden hose (Optional)
Start by removing all your window screens from the frame.

Now, in a large container, mix warm water with your dish soap. Mixing two teaspoons of dish soap and half a gallon of water should be more than enough.

Next, use the soft bristle brush to apply your cleaning agent and scrub in a soft, circular motion.

Finally, rinse with plenty of water. For this step, using a garden hose is much easier and faster.

It's possible that there are some remaining spots that need more cleaning. In this case, you can use a toothbrush and scrub that area until it looks spotless.

Make sure not no apply too much pressure because you don't want to bend or damage your window screen.

Remember to let them air dry for at least a few hours, although they may need to dry overnight.

Still Not Sure What To Do?

Don't worry! If you have a lot of window screens, this chore can be overwhelming. That's why you should consider hiring a cleaning service and ask what can they do about your window screens.
