Cleaning Tips For Each Type Of Fabric

We all know that each type of fabric comes with its own do's and don'ts for cleaning and conditioning. Let's read how to take care of the most common types of fabric and make sure they last for years!

Cleaning Leather Clothing

Just like every other organic material, leather must be handled with care. You'll need to wash by hand in this case.

You can start by mixing dish soap with warm water. Next, extend your garment over an ironing board or a clean countertop. Damp a microfiber cloth with the soap and water mix, and blot your garment instead of wiping or scrubbing, because that can leave marks.

After cleaning all dirty spots, grab a clean, dry cloth and blot to absorb as much liquid as possible.

Don't forget to apply some leather conditioner afterward!

Bonus tip: If possible, use distilled water instead of tap water. Some areas, such as Dallas, have what is known as "hard" water. This means that it contains a higher amount of minerals such as calcium and magnesium, which are like microscopic rocks. When you use hard water for cleaning a delicate material, it can create damage.

Cleaning Linen Clothing

Linen is another popular fabric material. It can be both hand washed and machine washed which is a huge plus. For removing stains, you can use a stain remover that contains hydrogen peroxide. Place your garment in a plastic tub or a bathub, let it soak for 30 minutes after adding the stain remover and then wash regularly.

If you want to use the washing machine, select a delicate cycle and hang dry instead of using your drier, to prevent shrinking.

Using mild detergent for delicate fabrics is also a must.

Cleaning Cotton Clothing

Cotton is the most common fabric for clothing and, same as linen, is prone to shrinking. Excessive heat is what causes this, therefore air-drying your garments is the way to go. For removing stubborn stains, you can try mixing a teaspoon of white vinegar with laundry detergent.

Cleaning Denim Clothing

Denim jeans are the most popular type of pants. But denim jackets and shorts are trendy as well. Denim is well known for its resistance and longevity. What most people don't know is that you should turn them inside out when washing, in order to preserve color and remove dirt from the inside.

For cleaning dirty spots, don't use the laundry because it will set the stain. Soak them in a plastic tub and add OxiClean directly on the stain, rub gently using a toothbrush in a soft, circular motion. Let sit for 30 minutes and make sure the stain was removed successfully before tossing it in the washing machine.

Your garments need cleaning and maintenance which can be sometimes tiresome but, in the long run, it will help you keep them looking brand new for many years.
